Final Project

Answer the following questions to get familiar with the graphs:

1. Click on the first caption, what is the graph about? Now, click on the second caption, what is new in this graph?

2. Observe the first graph, do you notice any decrease in fatalities after the last legislation that was passed in 2005 (check graph 2)? If not, what do you notice?

3. Do you think any previous legislations have helped prevent mass shootings in the US? Please observe the number of fatalities to answer this question.

4. What do you think will help prevent any future mass shootings?

  1. 1. The first graph plots the total fatalities per year in mass shootings. The second graph repeates this in a muted tone, and adds a plot for major gun law legislation.

    2. Despite a new law being passed, gun fatalities in mass shootings actually increases in the following years, even ignoring the outliers of 2015 and 2016.

    3. The legislation doesn't appear to have much of an impact on the total fatalities per year, but the total fatalities per year was relatively low before 2005, so assuming we knew for a fact that they reduced fatalities, it doesn't seem that the total fatalities would actually decrease that much.

    4. I think attending to mental health issues would provide a greater benefit with less opposition from the public than trying to continue to pass gun law legislation.

  2. 1. The first graph is representing about the number of fatalities during US mass shootings between 1968 – 2018. And the second caption, the graph adds some gun legislations passed in US between 1968-2018.
    2. After the legislation which passed in 2005, I saw the number of fatalities did not decrease too much. From 2005 to 2017, the number of fatalities increased over time.
    3. I observed that after the legislation which passed in 1993, I just prevent the mass shootings. The number of fatalities in 1993 is 29, and the number of fatalities in 1994 is 12. From the first graph, I observed it’s decreased.
    4. In my opinion, I think the government still need to improve the limitation of buying guns in US. Otherwise, the activities with large numbers of people should distribute more securities and polices.
